Clio vs PracticePanther

A neutral, feature-by-feature comparison for solo and small-firm attorneys picking legal practice management software in 2026.

Reviewed by Jonathan West · Updated Aug 25, 2026

For most solo and small firms, Clio is the better default choice. We help law firm clients set up and clean up Clio, along with the intake, engagement-letter automation, and customer relationship management (CRM) workflows built around it. Clio includes trust accounting that meets Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts (IOLTA) rules on its cheapest published tier. PracticePanther, by comparison, limits full trust accounting to its most expensive plan, Business Pro.

That matters because most solo and small firms hold client funds in trust. Paying $114 per user per month just to access a trust ledger wipes out much of PracticePanther's price advantage. Still, PracticePanther may be the better fit for firms that never handle trust funds. It also makes sense for firms that want a lower published price at every tier and prefer to avoid Clio's separate intake and artificial intelligence (AI) add-ons.

Both Clio and PracticePanther are cloud-based legal practice management platforms designed to handle cases, billing, and client communication in one system. For solo and small firms, the biggest differences come down to pricing transparency, trust accounting, and AI features.

All prices and features below come directly from the vendors' websites. Because legal software companies change their plans often, check Clio's pricing page and PracticePanther's pricing page before signing up.

Pricing: Clio vs PracticePanther Plans

PracticePanther publishes a price for all four of its plans. Clio publishes only one. EasyStart, Clio's entry tier, costs $49 per user per month billed annually, and Essentials, Advanced, and Clio's top tier are quoted only after a sales call.

PracticePanther runs Solo at $49 per user per month annually ($59 billed monthly), Essential at $69 ($79 monthly), and Business at $89 ($99 monthly). Business Pro runs $114 per user per month annually, or $124 billed monthly. Every figure sits on PracticePanther's own pricing page, with no form to fill out first.

Clio's published EasyStart price matches PracticePanther's Solo price exactly, at $49 per user per month. Once you need anything past matter management and basic billing, though, Clio's real number depends on your seat count and what a salesperson quotes you that day.

  • PracticePanther Solo: $49/user/month annual, $59 monthly
  • PracticePanther Essential: $69/user/month annual, $79 monthly
  • PracticePanther Business: $89/user/month annual, $99 monthly
  • PracticePanther Business Pro: $114/user/month annual, $124 monthly
  • Clio EasyStart: $49/user/month annual, the only Clio tier with a public price

Case and Matter Management

Both platforms track a matter from open to close with contacts, tasks, calendaring, and documents attached. Clio organizes work around a central matter record, with custom fields and document templates available from EasyStart up.

PracticePanther organizes work the same way, with contact and matter management, task workflows, and document templates included on every plan, including Solo. Automated workflow triggers move a matter to its next step, and they apply across the whole plan lineup, not just the top tier.

Matter tracking looks almost identical on both. Neither platform makes you buy a separate module just to open a file and track it to close. Billing, intake, and AI are the three areas that split Clio and PracticePanther apart, tier by tier.

Billing and Trust Accounting

Clio builds IOLTA-compliant trust accounting into every plan, including EasyStart at $49 per user per month. Time-and-billing and online payments ship alongside it, so a solo attorney gets compliant trust accounting from the first invoice.

PracticePanther splits billing into two levels. Every plan tracks billable time, expenses, and invoicing.

The deeper trust ledger, three-way reconciliation, general ledger, and Plaid-based bank feeds only arrive with PantherAccounting Plus. PracticePanther launched that suite in April 2026, and sells it exclusively on Business Pro.

That gap changes the real price comparison. A solo attorney who holds client funds and wants full trust accounting pays $114 a user each month on PracticePanther, not the $49 Solo price advertised on the homepage.

PracticePanther's $49 Solo price does not include full trust accounting. That ships only with Business Pro, about $65 a user higher, once PantherAccounting Plus is added.

Client Intake and CRM

PracticePanther bundles client intake forms into its product line, but only from the Business tier up, alongside native two-way texting and unlimited e-signature. Solo and Essential users do not get intake forms without upgrading.

Clio handles intake and CRM work through Clio Grow, a separate product from Clio Manage. Grow is bundled with Clio's top tier or sold as an add-on to a lower tier, so a firm that wants automated intake on EasyStart pays for two products.

In the Clio cleanups we've run for law firm clients, duplicate contacts and stale leads inside Clio Grow were the most common problem. They made automated intake look broken, not the software itself. Whichever platform you use, plan for someone to own the data hygiene, because neither vendor does that work for you.

AI Features: Clio vs PracticePanther

Clio ships native AI features. PracticePanther does not.

Clio Duo, expanding under the Manage AI name, reads a firm's own matter data to prioritize tasks, draft client updates, summarize documents, and auto-generate bills. Clio also added Draft AI for document assembly and Vincent AI for legal research, gained through Clio's 2025 acquisition of vLex.

Clio prices Clio Duo as a separate add-on. It is not folded into a plan's base price, so ask what the assistant costs on top of your seat count before you count on it.

PracticePanther has no built-in AI assistant as of 2026. It connects instead to outside tools like Smith.ai for AI-driven call answering. A firm that wants AI inside its case management software should look at Clio, or add a third-party tool on top of PracticePanther.

Integrations: Clio vs PracticePanther

Clio connects to far more outside tools than PracticePanther. Clio's App Directory lists more than 200 integrations, covering accounting, e-signature, calendaring, and legal research, backed by an open application programming interface (API) for custom builds.

PracticePanther lists roughly 30 native integrations, including QuickBooks Online, Outlook, Gmail, Google Calendar, Dropbox, and Google Drive. For anything outside that list, PracticePanther leans on Zapier to connect to other software.

A firm already running a specific accounting package, e-signature tool, or calendar app should compare its needs against both vendors' integration lists before signing. A missing native connection turns into a Zapier workaround or a manual export every month.

Client Portal, Texting, and E-Signature

Both platforms give clients a portal to check case status, share documents, and pay invoices online. PracticePanther includes its secure client portal on every plan, from Solo up.

Clio adds its client portal starting at the Essentials tier, so an EasyStart firm does not get one without upgrading. PracticePanther also bundles unlimited e-signature and native two-way texting into its Business tier and up, while Clio treats e-signature and some communication tools as separate add-ons.

A firm that leans on texting clients or sending engagement letters for signature should not assume those tools come with the base plan. Compare tiers on Clio's pricing page and PracticePanther's pricing page first.

Switching Between Clio and PracticePanther

Moving from one platform to the other takes more than a data export. Both vendors offer migration help for matters, contacts, documents, and billing history, but that help does not usually include cleaning the data first.

If you already run PracticePanther and want Clio's deeper AI or integration marketplace, budget time to remove duplicate contacts and matters with no assigned attorney before the migration starts. The same applies moving the other direction, from Clio into PracticePanther's simpler tier structure.

Ask both vendors for a written migration scope before you commit. A rushed migration causes more problems after the switch than picking the wrong platform does.

Who Should Skip Both Clio and PracticePanther

Skip both Clio and PracticePanther if your firm runs high-volume litigation or personal-injury caseloads that need deep case-intelligence and document-heavy workflows. Neither platform is built primarily for that. Litigation-specific practice management software fits better.

Skip both if you already run a working general-ledger accounting system and do not want a practice-management-first tool duplicating it. Clio and PracticePanther both push you toward their own billing and trust tools rather than a standalone accounting platform.

Skip PracticePanther specifically if native AI matters to your firm today, since it has none built in. Skip Clio specifically if you want every tier's price in writing before a sales call, since only EasyStart carries a public number.

What Would Change Our Answer

Clio publishing full pricing again would remove most of the uncertainty in this comparison. Firms could compare Essentials, Advanced, and the top tier side by side instead of booking a call first.

PracticePanther adding a native AI assistant, or building the trust ledger and three-way reconciliation into a lower tier, would close its biggest gaps against Clio. Either change would shift solo attorneys who hold trust funds toward PracticePanther's lower price.

Clio moving trust accounting behind a paid tier, the way PracticePanther currently gates it, would erase Clio's strongest argument for solo firms. Watch Clio's pricing page and PracticePanther's pricing page for changes before you renew.

Choosing Between Clio and PracticePanther

Choose Clio if you hold client funds in trust. It bundles that compliance into your cheapest plan, plus room to add AI-assisted drafting and legal research as your firm grows. Its 200-plus integrations give you the widest room to add outside tools later.

Choose PracticePanther if you do not hold trust funds. You get every tier's price in writing before you talk to a salesperson, and you pay less for a simpler, all-in-one plan. Its Business Pro tier still gets you full trust accounting if you outgrow the lower tiers.

Whichever you pick, treat the sticker price as a starting point. Add-ons, payment processing fees, and the hours spent cleaning old data before migration usually move the real cost more than the base per-user price does.

The Verdict

Clio is the stronger default for most solo and small firms. Trust accounting that meets IOLTA rules ships on Clio's cheapest published tier, EasyStart at $49 per user per month. PracticePanther reserves that same depth of trust accounting for Business Pro, its priciest plan at $114 per user per month.

PracticePanther fits a firm that never holds client funds in trust. It also fits a firm that wants every tier's price published up front and would rather skip Clio's separate intake, e-signature, and AI add-ons.

Neither platform is a universal answer. Map your firm's trust accounting duty, integration needs, and appetite for AI-assisted drafting against each vendor's actual tier list before you sign a multi-year contract.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • PracticePanther publishes the lower entry price, Solo at $49 per user per month annually, matching Clio's EasyStart at the same $49 figure, so the two tie at the bottom. The real cost gap opens once you need full trust accounting. PracticePanther does not include it until Business Pro at $114 per user per month, while Clio bundles IOLTA-compliant trust accounting into EasyStart.
  • No, PracticePanther has no native AI assistant built into the platform as of 2026. It integrates with outside AI tools like Smith.ai for call handling, but drafting, summarizing, and legal research inside the software itself are not part of PracticePanther today.
  • Clio has the stronger trust accounting story for most solo and small firms because IOLTA-compliant trust accounting ships on every tier, including EasyStart. PracticePanther's full trust ledger and three-way reconciliation, sold as PantherAccounting Plus, is limited to its Business Pro tier.
  • Only for EasyStart, which is publicly priced at $49 per user per month. Essentials, Advanced, and Clio's top tier all require a quote through Clio's sales form. Budget time for a sales call before you can compare Clio's higher tiers side by side.
  • Clio lists more than 200 integrations through its App Directory, while PracticePanther lists roughly 30 native integrations and leans on Zapier for the rest. Firms that rely on a wide range of outside software tend to find more of it pre-built for Clio.
  • Yes, PracticePanther works well for a two-attorney firm that wants matter management, billing, and a client portal bundled at a low published price. It fits less well if that firm holds client funds in trust and cannot justify the jump to Business Pro for full trust accounting.
  • Yes, both vendors offer migration support for matters, contacts, documents, and billing history, though neither includes cleaning up duplicate or outdated records as part of that help. Get a written migration scope from either vendor before you commit, since a rushed migration causes more post-switch problems than picking the wrong platform does.
